Teledyne DGO offers high reliability, high pressure connectors, penetrators, cabling and feedthrough systems for harsh environments

Teledyne DGO designs connection systems that transmit signals, data or power through challenging media, such as subsea oil wells, and  through pressure barriers, such as the hull of a submarine. Because the cost of failure is so high, Teledyne DGO designs and manufactures its products to deliver total reliability. We engineer and manufacture our products as if lives and fortunes depended on them. Because they do. Teledyne DGO designs and manufactures systems to transmit signals, data and power in applications where failure to perform may contribute to substantial lost revenue, aborted missions or even loss of life:

•Aircraft
•Biomedical devices
•Deep-sea exploration vehicles
Offshore oil and gas operations
•Power generation, including nuclear power
•Submarines

Teledyne DGO applications typically bridge environments which absolutely cannot intermingle, such as the inside and outside of a submarine. The environments we keep out may exhibit any number of challenges:

•Corrosive elements
•Extreme temperatures
•High pressure or vacuum
•Mechanical stresses
•Radiation
•Steam

But there's more. These environmental extremes typically have high cycle rates. And the solution must function under severe constraints regarding size, weight, cost, operational life, logistical support and safety, all the while meeting operational life requirements. When all these challenges add up to a critical mass, Teledyne DGO will have a solution.

Teledyne DGO's products include:
•Pressure hull penetrators and feedthroughs
•Connectors
•Cable assemblies
•Electrical Penetration Assemblies (EPA)
•Wellhead feedthrough systems

To fulfill our mission, we've mastered a toolkit that includes the most reliable technologies and materials capabilities:

•Fiber optics
•Glass-to-metal sealing
•Molding
•Pressure-balanced, oil-filled (PBOF) cabling
•Dry mateable technology

Molding Facility Certification
D.G. O'Brien has been certified by the United States Navy to manufacture submarine outboard cable assemblies and components. A copy of our certification can be downloaded here .

Glass-to-metal sealing is the most reliable kind.

Glass seals perform under high pressure, vacuum, high temperature, thermal cycling, radiation, shock and vibration. Totally inorganic, they won't degrade with time.

Benefits of glass-to-metal sealing:

  •  Extremely high durability
  • Mechanical stress and strain resistance
  • High shock and vibration resistance
  • Thermal shock stability and resistance
  • Chemical stability and resistance
  • Absolute hermeticity: zero diffusion or leakage
  • Long-term stability - inorganic, non-ageing
  • 60+ years of proven reliability

Proven in these environments

  • Hydrostatic: over 25,000 psig
  • Temperature shock: -40° to 204°C
  • Synergistic HPHT exposure
  • Vibration up to 2000 Hz
  • Mechanical and explosive shock > 10,000 g
  • Hermeticity: He leak rate less than 1 x 10-8 cm3/sec
  • Radiation
  • Steam
How is it done?
  • Repeatable, controlled manufacturing process
  • High temperature process > 1800°F (980°C)
  • Programmable logic controlled furnaces, specialized atmosphere control
  • Compression seal between conductor, glass and body
  • Optimize coefficient of thermal expansions

Materials sealed: routine to exotic

Special materials processing is routine at Teledyne DGO. Direct glass-to-metal seals for body materials include titanium, Inconel, Monel®, K-Monel®, tantalum, Kovar and stainless steels such as 316L and Superduplex. Contact materials include copper, Alumel®, Chromel®, constantan, Kovar®, platinum, molybdenum, Inconel®, Hastelloy®, Incoloy®, tantalum and carbon steel.

In addition to glass-to-metal sealing, Teledyne DGO controls quality by performing the following key processes in-house; gold, nickel and solder plating; heat treating; and nickel, copper and silver brazing
