How Independent Testing Validated Teledyne’s Subsea Ethernet Cable

Proving Performance When Reliability Matters Most

In the subsea industry, cable performance is often taken for granted - until a failure occurs. When systems are deployed in deep water, a cable is more than a connection point; it becomes a critical part of the mission. A single failure can lead to costly delays, unscheduled vessel time, and difficult offshore interventions.

That reality was top of mind for Ixys AS, a Norwegian subsea technology company with extensive expertise in designing and manufacturing subsea systems and cable assemblies. As the company evaluated alternatives to an existing cable supplier, Ixys sought more than datasheets and specifications. They wanted proof.

Following discussions with Teledyne, Ixys requested a sample of Teledyne’s TCSC4211-04 subsea Ethernet cable and conducted an independent qualification program using its own connectors, equipment, test procedures, and acceptance criteria. The objective was simple: determine whether the cable could reliably withstand the demanding pressures and performance requirements of real-world subsea operations.

The results spoke for themselves. From high-pressure hyperbaric testing to Ethernet signal validation, the cable assembly passed every test and remained well within Ixys acceptance limits throughout the qualification process.

The Test Article

Ixys constructed its own test assembly consisting of Teledyne TCSC4211-04 Cat5e subsea Ethernet cable, two Scorpion subsea connectors, and Ixys termination and assembly processes. The finished assembly represented a realistic subsea cable length and configuration for Ixys, suitable for qualification testing.

  • Test 1: Electrical Continuity and Contact Resistance
Ixys measured resistance across all conductor paths before, during, and after hyperbaric exposure. Every conductor remained comfortably within acceptance limits throughout the test sequence, including at full test pressure. The cable maintained electrical integrity throughout the pressure cycle with no unstable contacts, open circuits, or excessive resistance changes.

  • Test 2: Insulation Resistance
Ixys required a minimum insulation resistance of 550 MΩ (0.55 GΩ). Actual measured values ranged from approximately 1.7 GΩ to over 5.2 GΩ, significantly exceeding the acceptance threshold. These results demonstrated excellent dielectric integrity and strong protection against electrical leakage in subsea environments.

  • Test 3: Ethernet Performance
The cable successfully passed wire mapping validation, Ethernet signal integrity testing, and Gigabit Ethernet qualification. The testing confirmed that the cable assembly not only survives extreme pressure conditions but continues to support the reliable high-speed data transmission required by modern subsea systems.

  • Test 4: Hyperbaric Qualification
Pressure testing is the defining challenge for subsea cable systems. Ixys subjected the assembly to an extended hyperbaric test at 440 bar (6,382 psi), representing 110% of its rated operating pressure. The cable assembly successfully completed the full pressure cycle while maintaining electrical and Ethernet performance throughout testing.

Independent Validation

Ixys built the assembly using its own processes, installed its own connectors, conducted testing using its own procedures, and evaluated results against its own acceptance criteria. Following completion of the qualification program, Ixys reported that all parameters were well within its acceptance criteria.

The Outcome

Following successful qualification, discussions progressed beyond a laboratory sample toward larger production lengths for field use. The results demonstrated both technical suitability and the potential for Teledyne to provide an alternative source of supply during periods of supplier disruption.

More Than a Passed Test

The Ixys evaluation was never simply about verifying a cable specification. It was about reducing risk.

Looking for additional sourcing options, Ixys put Teledyne’s subsea Ethernet cable through the same rigorous qualification process it applies to components destined for demanding underwater environments. The cable emerged with a clean record - successfully passing electrical, insulation, Ethernet, and hyperbaric pressure testing, including operation at pressures exceeding its rated working level.

For engineers, the results demonstrate stable electrical performance, robust insulation integrity, and reliable data transmission under extreme pressure. For procurement teams and program managers, they highlight something equally important: confidence in supply, confidence in performance, and confidence that critical subsea systems are built on proven components.

In an industry where reliability is measured not in convenience but in operational uptime, project success, and mission continuity, independent validation carries significant weight. The Ixys qualification program demonstrated that Teledyne’s subsea Ethernet cable is not only capable of meeting demanding subsea requirements, but also ready to perform when it matters most.
