Precision Tracking. Autonomous Defense.

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) encompasses a wide range of mission types designed to detect, track and deter enemy submarines. These missions are critical for protecting naval assets, sea lanes of communication, and coastal infrastructure.

In today’s evolving maritime defense landscape, ASW is critical to safeguarding naval assets, sea lanes, and coastal infrastructure. Teledyne Marine delivers advanced ASW capabilities through a suite of autonomous platforms, acoustic sensors, and integrated systems designed to detect and track submarine threats across diverse operational environments.

Types of ASW Missions

  1. Detection and Tracking
Teledyne employs both passive and active monitoring technologies, including sonar systems, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), and hydrophone arrays, to detect and track submarine activity. For missions requiring extended endurance, autonomous platforms such as the Gavia, Osprey, and SeaRaptor AUVs—equipped with high-resolution acoustic sensors—provide a reliable solution.

  2. Classification and Identification
In regions with heightened submarine activity, Teledyne delivers cutting-edge solutions for detection and identification. Our passive acoustic monitoring systems, powered by advanced hydrophone arrays, provide early awareness of unusual activity. For precise classification, our next-generation sonar technology offers clear visual identification—even in the deepest waters—whether deployed on AUVs or surface vessels. In shallow environments, ASV-mounted sonar ensures accurate results. And when GPS signals are unavailable, Teledyne’s compact navigation systems guarantee pinpoint localization, independent of satellite coverage.

  3. Barrier and Area Denial
Deployable sensor networks and autonomous patrols prevent submarine access to strategic zones. This includes undersea glider deployments and seabed-mounted acoustic systems.

  4. Littoral, Under-Ice, and Unmanned ASW
In GPS-denied environments, Teledyne’s advanced compact navigation systems deliver precise localization without reliance on satellite signals. Forward-looking sonar solutions enable visual identification in these conditions, with a range of sonar types available to suit varying vessel sizes—all engineered to provide superior data quality for rapid target recognition. Operations in shallow, acoustically complex waters are supported by agile AUVs such as Gavia and Osprey, featuring modular payload configurations and exceptional maneuverability.

  5. Training and Simulation
Teledyne supports ASW training through simulation modules and sonar training systems integrated into its vehicles and software platforms. The Sonar Training Target Module (STM) is integrated into Gavia AUVs to simulate submarine targets by retransmitting sonar signals and emulating realistic acoustic signatures. Teledyne Gavia AUV with STM has been used for over a decade to train sonar operators, providing a cost-effective alternative to live submarine assets.
