The Sentinel Mission is a collaborative initiative between Teledyne Webb Research and Rutgers University to complete the first-ever global circumnavigation with an autonomous underwater vehicle, with support from organizations like NOAA, the UN Ocean Decade, and the Marine Technology Society. The mission centers around the Slocum Sentinel Glider, named “Redwing” (Research & Education Doug Webb Inter-National Glider), which will be the first autonomous underwater glider to complete a round-the-world voyage.

Goals

  • Enhance oceanographic data collection and analysis
  • Support marine research and conservation efforts
  • Improve maritime security and surveillance capabilities
  • Foster collaboration between academic, governmental, and industry partners

Benefits

  • Provides real-time data for oceanographic research
  • Enhances the ability to monitor and protect marine ecosystems
  • Supports the development of new technologies and methodologies in marine science
  • Strengthens international collaboration in marine research and conservation

Key Partners

  • Teledyne Webb Research: Leading the development and deployment of Redwing Glider
  • Rutgers University: Providing scientific expertise and research support
  • NOAA: Offering resources and coordination for oceanographic data collection
  • Marine Technology Society: Facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • UN Ocean Decade: Aligning the mission with global efforts to promote sustainable ocean management

Plan of Action

  • Deployment: Deploy Redwing glider from Woods Hole and follow a flight path, developed by Rutgers University students, to collect oceanographic data and monitor marine environments.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze the collected data to gain insights into oceanographic processes.
  • Collaboration: Work with partners to share findings, develop new technologies, and promote sustainable ocean management.
  • Education and Outreach: Engage with the public and the scientific community to raise awareness about the importance of ocean research and conservation.
